ATHENA A. ACCESSORIES- DESIGNED BY ATHENA A. IN SOUTH AFRICA
A celebration of bold statements, unique shapes and the timeless allure of brass.
All of Athena's work is handmade by African craftsman in South Africa and Kenya, from brass, aluminum and Ankole bull horn.
Ankole Bull Horn
Used for centuries for milk and meat, Ankole cows are indigenous to east Africa. However once slaughtered, their striking long horns are usually discarded and burnt. Athena uses these discarded horns in her work, celebrating the unique color and markings of each horn.
Brass is a metallic alloy made up of copper and zinc and has been used to make jewelry for thousands of years. It is favored due to it's versatility, malleability and beauty.
Aluminum is the unsung hero in the jewelry world! It is eco friendly, extremely lightweight, hypoallergenic and is completely made from recycled materials.
Athena is a master in studying how to enhance and celebrate the human form.
After an award winning film editing career, Athena decided to switch careers and study shoe design in Milan, Italy and at the prestigious London College of Fashion. But her life plans were temporarily put on hold, after Athena was diagnosed and then spent a few years successfully overcoming cancer.
Years later, while on a trip to Kenya, Athena found a metalsmith in a market, whose craftsmanship intrigued her. Inspired, the next day she took him some of her designs and that became the serendipitous beginning of the Athena A Jewelry brand!
